"Le parole sono respiro", "Words are
breath", is a series of fragments, through which I tried to voice the
figure of Astarte, fascinating and silent female presence of Byron's Manfred
(1817). Manfred a typically Byronian figure is a sort of fully Romantic
Faust, half-mortal, half-immortal, who from his infinite knowledge draws
nothing but an infinite sense of impotence. His last wish is to meet his dead
sister Astarte, to whom he is linked through an extremely intense love and a
lacerating guilt. Just a moment, she rises up from the realm of death, to
which, however, she comes back before Manfred can be accorded the long-awaited
forgiveness.
I tried to draw Astarte from the rib of Byron's poem,
in order to let her persist for a longer time in her so eloquent silence,
opposed to the dense rhetoric of Manfred. Listening her fragments I found a
further confirmation of the most authentic vocation of Poetry: to make present
the absence, through short gleaming appearances, that one can only try to write
in flashes.
